Having found EZ Hyoung's first album pretty enjoyable, I decided to go ahead and pick up his second album (although he apparently released a 1.5 type album of sorts which I can't find locally). Upon listening to Spectrum, I find that the music hasn't evolved or changed significantly from the past effort, however, neither has it gotten any weaker, leaving Spectrum an enjoyable, but not transcendent, experience.
The opening track, "Everything", actually does suggest a kind of change, being more minimalist than his previous works, with multi-layered vocals taken across a guitar, but it doesn't really stay different for long. The music largely follows the same stripe established on Radio Dayz, largely composed of sunny rock-pop with clear Beatles influences (and one song even getting titled "Beatles Cream Soup"). There are some minor tweaks to song composition, notably in the aforementioned opening track as well as the more technical "oh!"'s on "Girls Girls Girls" and minor electronic production flourishes on other tracks. However, the album is largely more of the same.
Basically, if you liked his first album and want more of EZ Hyoung's easygoing rock-pop with a couple ballads, you're going to like this. It works for me, because I liked his first album and don't mind more of the same... for now. But if you weren't a fan of Radio Dayz, Spectrum will hardly win you over. Fun, decent, reliably enjoyable music, but, again, nothing that snaps and sizzles beyond that here. 7/10.
