When I recently received my latest order from MrKwang, I was surprised to find that he passed along a freebie from Hyangmusic.com, Volume 7 of their music sampler. This, of course, is a dangerous thing to fall into my hands, as I often find compilations a deadly new source for musical obsessions and it turns out that Hyangmusic.com's sampler, does exactly what they're hoping it does. It hooks me on a lot more new artists.

Overall, Hyangmusic.com's focus appears to be Korean indie as the artists represented on their sampler aren't exactly the kind that top the Korean gayo charts. Whoever compiled the sampler has a specific taste in music, moving more towards the quieter sounds, whether jazzy pop, singer-songwriter pieces, quieter indie rock, folk, or mellow neo-New Wave. But, I couldn't be happier with some of these discoveries. Actually, Indieful ROK had news on a lot of these artists and is a great place to find new artists. Personally, I almost have to avoid checking out recommendations to avoid new obsessions and the consequent hundreds of dollars spent on importing their CDs.

But, when a sampler disc like this falls into my hands, I don't think I'll be able to avoid it. Of the eighteen artists represented, I was already following Swallow, Oriental Lucy and Apollo 18, but it looks like I'm going to be adding almost every artist on the sampler into my listening list. And that is the sign of a successful promotional compilation. Thanks, MrKwang and Hyangmusic.com! 8/10.
