New for me
In the recent development of my appreciation for the music of Leessang, I've been blind buying their albums and I was surprised to discover that this particular album, Leessang, Special Jungin, is actually a compilation. I'm going to speculate that this was in part released after Jungin parted ways with Leessang as their soul vocalist of choice with ALI taking over for Leessang starting with Library of Soul and Jungin moving onto G.Fla. It appears that during her time with Leessang, however, she did release a couple singles and so those are collected here along with some other loose singles that weren't on Leessang of Honey Family and 再啓發.
Of the eighteen tracks on Leessang, Special Jungin, only four have not been previously released on one of the previous Leessang albums. As a result this is a bit of an off-putting release for serious fans of Leessang, especially because two of those tracks are Jungin's solo tracks and so serious fans would be looking to purchase this album for pretty good R&B oriented "Sad Song" and the somewhat silly "남자이야기 - My Way" which features Leessang's old team, Honey Family.
On top of that, another draw might be the VCD that's included that features a number of Leessang and Jungin's music videos from the era encompassing their first to albums. However, these videos are encoded at a rather tiny resolution and are effectively visually inferior to YouTube videos, although the sound is noticeably better. It would've been better if they had released a DVD with higher quality encoding, but as it is, the VCD is not going to be a convincing reason to most.
Now casual appreciators of Leessang will find this compilation a pretty good value as it collects all the hits and a good number of album tracks from the first two albums, although the albums are really strong enough to hold up to listens without being compiled. Serious fans of Jungin will probably appreciate this release since it does collect Jungin's otherwise unavailable singles as well as her work with Leessang from this early phase of their respective careers, however, they will be swimming in a large number of tracks that don't serve their interests either.
As such, I'm not exactly sure who this compilation is supposed to target. Were it a more compact release that only focused on Jungin's work with the group or perhaps an EP that collected the first four tracks (the only unique ones), then it might serve serious fans better. But it's none of the above and so Leessang, Special Jungin doesn't serve any group particularly well as casual listeners will be confused to find the pair of Jungin solos up front rather than sprinkled throughout the tracklist and there doesn't seem to be a really meaningful organization of the tracks besides the unreleased/released division. Both casual and serious fans of Leessang and Jungin will want to consider whether this is worth the purchase. 6/10.
