Inbox: Sweetpea - 하늘에 피는 꽃

New for me

Sweetpea's second solo effort resembles his first in many ways, also echoing some aspects of his work with Deli Spice on some tracks. As such, those that appreciated his neverendingstories but wanted more than its brief eight tracks will find much more here to appreciate, including a small handful of covers and a mix of music that all tends towards the more mellow side, but still providing a variety of calmer, more soothing music.

Sweetpea's continuation of his smooth, calming style is evident from the opening track, "침묵", with its simple acoustic folk. However, Sweetpea doesn't limit himself to folk and branches out into rock on "멀어져간 사람들", however, even with some distorted guitar solos, his voice retains that same smooth quality and so the rock is never raucous, but merely adds a little energy to the album. This is apparent from Sweetpea's surprising mid-tempo rock cover of Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It", which is delivered in Sweetpea's paced style. The most unique moment (and perhaps the most energetic one) on the album comes from "뱀파이어는 이렇게 말했다" with its undulating guitars and rhythm, rock solo and alternating low-voiced spoken lyrics against high-pitched falsetto singing, another surprising moment on the album.

However, the album largely follows the mix of acoustic folk and some mellower rock that those who have experienced neverendingstories would be familiar with. Sweetpea's sound is pretty distinct at this voice, obviously well attuned to his own smooth vocals. And if that's the kind of music you're looking for, then Sweetpea's second album is going to continue providing what he started on the first. The mix of music keeps the album from becoming too narrow and it even contains a couple of surprising moments, but overall, Sweetpea continues his soothing sound here. 7/10.
